Stupid ways to die and other writing ideas

A few days ago, as entertainment, my sister, mum and mum’s partner decided that when we sell the house and move out, to wind the neighbours up, we’d tell them, casually, that the new people were …whatever…It all got a bit silly.

It did get me thinking though, when I couldn’t sleep, of stupid ways for a character to die, it’s a game I like to call ‘daft ways to die’. It occurs to me that the Darwin Awards would be a good source of inspiration for such a game.

The Darwin Awards, if you aren’t aware, are awards given posthumously to people who have successfully taken themselves out of the gene pool. I had a quick glance through the stories by clicking the ‘random story’ link. There’s some dim twits around (or, not, as the case may be).

I’ve also been thinking about this year’s NaNoWriMo; several months early but I like to be prepared. I’ve had a dearth of inspiration since I’ve been pouring all my spare energy in to writing the novel I drafted during last year’s NaNoWriMo. While in Grimsby yesterday I was strolling around Waterstones (I’m sad to say we have no independent book shops in this area, I think there might be one in Louth or Lincoln though) I saw one of the books the organisers of NaNoWriMo have written to help people write. Obviously, I bought it, for two reasons:
1) To support NaNoWriMo, an event I have benefited from;
2) A prompt to help me prepare for NaNoWriMo 2014.

While I was riding to dad’s this morning it occured to me that I did have something to use as a prompt. A couple of years ago I wrote two or three short stories about two characters, a pair of hapless barbarians called Tobold and Hibalt, who live in a place called Borderlands. There’s something slightly ‘Discworld’ about the setting, a mix of modern and medieval. I think they might be on my blog somewhere actually. I’m going to work through the exercises in my new acquisition using the short stories I have as the basis for the characters and write a completely new story for them.

I hope you’ve all had a lovely midsummer weekend; I have had a great time with my family today and yesterday.

Bye,

Rose
