Hunter’s Secret Excerpt 2
I will never forget that first corpse. The blood, still warm and sticky on my hand as I felt for a pulse and prayed I would find one. Of course, I didn’t. I remember the dead eyes staring up to the clear cold skies. Oh God, it was scary.
My heart raced, my breathing was quick and shallow. My breath floated away on the freezing air but suddenly I was sweating under my jacket. Hot. Suffocating.
Then I looked at Fraser. He was covered in the dead man’s blood. His blue bike was coated in that dark, red, mucilaginous liquid. Blood feels sticky and has a metallic smell when it is spilt in that quantity. I didn’t know that. I was terrified and I could tell Fraser was scared too. His smart remarks stopped. He was panting. Sweat covered his face. He tried to wipe it away and smeared the blood from the dead man all over his forehead. Then he threw up.
I wanted to comfort him, but that would have meant touching him, and the blood, again. I looked at the dead man. He wasn’t any taller than Fraser. His hair looked quite long, and he was fashionably dressed but covered in blood.
I couldn’t see where the blood was coming from. I couldn’t see an injury, but it must have been bad. Could he have done it to himself, slipping on the icy ground? Had someone attacked him? They might still be watching us. We had to get away. They might come back for us. I’d better get Fraser home. We should ride home as fast as we can and tell Mum and Dad. They can phone someone. Dad will know what to do. He’s seen everything. People tell him anything. Fraser doesn’t want to touch his bike, but we must get home quickly and get help.
