My Review
I became interested in the ‘Intuitive Eating’ movement a couple of years ago when I reviewed Caroline Dooner’s book and I thought I’d have a read of this book. It’s a ‘daily practice and inspiration’ book to help people on their journey. It contains the principles of Intuitive Eating and then a daily piece of advice, something to think about or an activity. It encourages the reader to review their thoughts and actions and to really think about why they feel the way they do about food.
I have found this book supportive, useful and thought provoking as I deal with my fluctuating disordered eating (things got bad while I was doing a ‘Health and Nutrition’ course and the continuing ‘weight management programme’ I’ve been prescribed isn’t helping). I planned to read a page a day and then review in a year, but I’m two books behind on my GoodReads Challenge so I’ve read through it today from where I left off (day 40). It’ll go back in the kitchen and I’ll start from day 43 on Monday, even though I’ve already read it all. It takes the reader on a journey to food freedom and I want to go on that journey.
You work through each of the ten principles of intuitive eating with body appreciation practises, mantras, weekly intentions and mid-week check-ins. Day 43 for example asks the reader to notice their hunger signs and any patterns associated with when feels best to eat after feeling hunger, and what emotional and physical signs you get when hungry. Day 234 talks about boundary setting and the guilt which often comes with it. There is a bit of variety of daily actions, readings and thoughts that leads the reader through the different areas.
There are moments of ‘woo’ but it’s not ridiculous and I think this bite-size format will be really helpful for people dealing with disordered eating who want to drop diet culture. I think it’s best to work through it in sequence the first time around and then it can be dipped into when you need a boost.
