My Review
Thanks to the team at Love Books Tours for organising this tour and to the author for sending me a copy of this book.
I’m not any sort of influencer, but in order to keep in touch with people, learn and share, I have social media. Currently, Twitter and Instagram. I used to have Tumblr and Facebook too, but I got bored of Tumblr and couldn’t stand the drama on Facebook. Also, I was being harassed by a former friend who used Facebook to do that. So I left Facebook and stopped posting on my Tumblrs.
There have been, and remain, quite a few social media sites on the internet, though most are owned by a small number of companies who can control, or not, the flow of information. Payne covers many of them in this book, with potted histories of the sites and their creators, the pros and cons of each site, and how they went defunct. He also covers the move from ‘old’ media to ‘new’ media, discusses the way information flowed and flows in these media forms and how that effects the people involved in them. He uses examples of real people who rose to influence through their use of social media to illustrate ways you can succeed or fail to thrive.
The use of examples is very instructive and the writing style is informal. I found this an easy read, engrossing and informative. It’s not a large book, certainly, but it is up to date, being written as things changed during the pandemic. It is clearly written by someone with a passion for the internet and the opportunities it offers people for non-traditional income generation. Payne introduces what he believes to be the next stage of internet development, the metaverse and provides clear advice for getting a foothold in the busy, crowded world of internet influence.
