When a man is shot at point blank range outside an isolated country pub, Kay Hunter is thrust into one of the most dangerous cases of her career.

As personal and political disputes threaten to undermine her efforts to track down the killer, Kay’s investigation is complicated further when her superiors elect to coordinate the subsequent manhunt themselves.

Uncovering a covert trade in outlawed weapons and faced with witnesses too scared to talk, Kay will have to do everything in her power to stop the killer and prevent another tragedy.

Except this time, one of her team is in the direct line of fire…

The Dying Season is the 12th book in the Detective Kay Hunter series by USA Today bestselling author Rachel Amphlett, and perfect for readers who love fast-paced crime thrillers.

My Review

Thanks to Anne for organising this blog tour and to the author for my audiobook download.

I haven’t heard of this author before, nor her crime series. This book is number 12 in the Detective Kay Hunter series. A man is shot point blank outside a rural pub. Hunter and her team start the investigation, but her superiors take over, leaving Kay to run the investigation into the identity of the victim. In the process they uncover the trade in illegal firearms and risk their lives.

I enjoyed this book. The characters are obviously long standing and the author is comfortable writing them. They are fully fleshed out and I felt for them. The interactions between the characters and the tensions of personalities are strong elements of the book. I enjoyed the way the teams dealing with different aspects of the case interacted with each other. Kay and Adam are a lovely couple and their interactions are very funny.

This is a procedural crime novel, and it does it really well, so if you like the nitty-gritty details of police procedure, this book is definitely for you. There are red herrings and scheming criminals to liven things up between team meetings and driving.

I enjoyed this audiobook. The narration was really good. Each character had their own voice.

Might go back and read the rest of the series.
