It has been thirteen years since the elderly residents of Magnolia Court were scammed out of a comfortable retirement by an unscrupulous developer who took their money and ran. A twist of fate leads Gabby, Uncle Max and Aunt Hetty’s niece, to uncover the developer’s whereabouts. Pointed in the right direction by Gabby, the residents draw on their life skills to overcome one obstacle after another in order to recover what is theirs by right.
No one should underestimate the tenacity and ingenuity of this charming and endearing bunch of senior citizens. Age and infirmity are set aside as they set out on their quest to seek retribution.
My Review
Thanks to Anne Cater of Random Thing’s Tours for organising this blog tour and to the author for my copy of her book.
This book was marvellous fun to read, I got through three quarters of it in a day, and the final quarter the next day. The writing is easy to read and the story just flows across the page. The plot is fun and complex enough to keep the reader interested but not labyrinthine or over-worked. The ‘Sting’ is clever, and the denouement entertaining. There is of course a happy ending, which was sweet.
I liked the characters, they were complex and sympathetic. I enjoyed the interspersed articles and stories of some of the ‘Silveries’. Each one has some relevance to the plot although it only becomes obvious in their time. The elderly characters are sympathetically written, not caricatures or simple. The joys and difficulties of aging and family life are written about fairly and not syrupy, without condescension. It makes a change to have elderly lead characters who aren’t just there to be murdered or provide background.
I recommend this book, it’s an entertaining read.
