My Review

Thanks to the author for sending me a copy of this book and to Anne for organising this tour.

I drew giraffes!

My art skills are quite, quite limited but I managed to draw a giraffe. The first one I drew is the blue one with red, yellow and orange. The side-on picture, with a little whimsy, is the second one. The final one I drew, so far, is the more naturalistic one.

The book provides simple and clear instructions for drawing giraffes like pictures one and three, and smaller examples that I took inspiration from for picture two. There are some little pictures that show giraffes wearing different things, like a Santa hat or a necklace, which are part of a game at the end of the book, along with a word search and information for children about giraffes and looking after them and the planet. There are also little ‘Did you know?’ paragraphs about giraffes on each page.

It was joyfully whimsical to read and try out, and made my day; thanks Alice! I tagged Alice May on my Instagram when I shared the pictures, and she was complimentary about my efforts. That also made my day.

If you think you can’t draw, this book will give you the confidence to try. It’s aimed at children, but this 40-year-old still benefitted from it, so I think if you’re an adult who wants to start drawing animals but don’t know where to start, this is a good place.

I would also like to try the next book, about drawing ostriches.
