Funny things happen in my brain at six in the morning; it’s a fairly regular occurrence so I’m not too worried. For the last week or so my brain has been working on a concept of life, or more precisely the effect of humanity on other life on Earth.Continue reading “Dance”

Weight =/= health
As anyone who knows me personally, or reads my blog regularly knows, I’m a bit out of the ‘healthy’ weight range on the old BMI scale.

Oh the joys…
I’ve lost my voice again, drat it, so I’ve had to ring in sick – it’s a little difficult to answer phones with no voice, I barely managed to call my employer! I’m lying here in bed reading stuff on the internets to keep my mind engaged. It won’t pay the bills but it is interesting.Continue reading “Oh the joys…”
Humberside Police: Now victim-blaming on a bus near you.
There’s something slightly disconcerting about this poster from Humberside Police about drinking to excess.

My Review
Eleanor is expecting a high level assignment straight from school, but when she receives a lowly post in a remote town her hopes are disappointed. Brought up in the Empire, where all children go to live in schools almost immediately after birth, families don’t exist and everyone has a place assigned to them based on their abilities, Eleanor has never known anything different. Her talents have been honed by the mysterious Leban, and when, disappointment arrives she seeks him out in the cave he calls home. Leban isn’t in but a book he left for Eleanor sparks a new idea.
Eleanor leaves school to become an Assassin.
Thus begins the adventure.
I quite enjoyed this novel; the character of Eleanor grew on me as she developed from a spoilt and cossetted school girl to an Assassin used to starvation and hard work. The world is well drawn and intriguing, with bits of the Empires history, politics and future mentioned which whet the appetite. The writing style was a little clunky at first but became more fluent as the novel progressed.
A YA fantasy I recommend and an author to watch.

Sorry
I am a terrible blogger; the day job is paying the bills but it’s really cutting in to my reading/writing time. I am getting some writing done but at the expense of reading time. For this month and next it’s possible book reviews will be sparse. I am still reading, it is just taking longer.
The Christmas Card Reciprocity Dilemma
I said I’d write about this, didn’t I?
The title is a misnomer really; it isn’t a dilemma for me. Small children and

Observe
As regular readers might have noticed, I went to Nottingham at the weekend. Unfortunately my preexisting cold has got worse because instead of spending the weekend wrapped up in bed drinking lots of hot lemon and honey I went out in to the world and tried to be normal.
