A while back I was looking for some information
about bisexuality and polyamorous relationships; the novel I wrote during NaNoWriMo 2013 features main characters/relationships that are, and I wanted to make sure I was accurately portraying them. I came across a reference to this ebook while in the process of that research.
It looked interesting and a few days ago I finally got around to buying and reading it.
‘Sex, Love and Understanding the Universe’ is the tale of Jim, a young man from upstate New York as he grows up from a happy eleven year old in the late nineteen sixties through his difficult teenage years during which time his rational, atheist parents became conservative Christians, while he realises he is bisexual and falls in love for the first time, followed by his escape to San Francisco to study physics and live openly, and ends when he is 27, a physics PhD in a polyamorous relationship with a married couple and his best friend.
It’s an unusual example of a bildungsroman, but well written. The characters are engaging and plot interesting. The main story arc -Jim’s acceptance of himself – is the foundation of the plot. It’s told in the first person present tense. I think the author has done that very well.
Unfortunately the book is marred by poor editing and obvious spelling errors. I can forgive one mistaken ‘weather’ when ‘whether’ is meant but two or three on the same page suggests a laxity in editing, or relying on spell checker to pick up errors. It’s that sort of laziness that gets self-published ebook a bad reputation and does none of us any good.

I’m just seeing this for the first time. Thank you for reading my novel! And thank you for taking the time to review it! Editing errors have been corrected since you read it. I now have it in a print edition as well. Many apologizes for those errors! I had no money to pay an editor, but it just goes to show how editing one’s own writing does not work, no matter how careful you try to be.
Couple of corrections to your post. The novel is titled “Love, Sex, and Understanding the Universe,” not “Sex, Love, and Understanding the Universe.” Also, the book is written in past tense, not present tense.
The story isn’t so much about Jim learning to accept himself – that comes easy – it’s trying to be true to himself in a world that won’t accept him.
Hey, thanks for commenting. Sorry about getting the title the wrong way round. I’m sure my blog readers will be interested to read your comments and corrections, and about the availability of a print edition. I apologize for my errors
I completely understand where you’re coming from on the self-editing. I have tried to and did not succeed.
Thanks for following my blog.
